Abstract

Biodegradable films were prepared using two varieties of glue plants, i.e., Gloiopeltis tenax and Gloiopeltis furcata, in order to increase the utilization of under-utilized seaweeds. Tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water-vapor permeability (WVP), water solubility (WS), and color of the films were measured. Smooth and transparent films were prepared using two glue plants with their 2% powder. TS of the films prepared with Gloiopeltis tenax and Gloiopeltis furcata were 23.9¡¾4.4 and 26.6¡¾6.6 MPa, respectively, which are comparable with that of carrageenan film (30.5¡¾5.2 MPa). WVP of the glue plant films with Gloiopeltis tenax and Gloiopeltis furcata were 2.9¡¾0.1 and 2.6¡¾0.1 ng¡¤m/§³.s.Pa, respectively. By adding a plasticizer, the resulting films showed 3.9-4.6 fold decrease in TS, 9.8-11.9 fold increase in E, and slight increase in both WVP and WS.
